1215: ‘See’ what I ‘mean’? How light affects the way we feel

Dominic Meyrick, Hoare Lea

There is no doubt that an aspiration for wellbeing is a good thing, and it is only right that an employer should aim to improve the wellbeing of employees in the workplace. However, people are not battery hens or plants – it does not necessarily follow that if we get the lighting just so, yield will increase. The link to productivity is therefore difficult to prove and, if it does exist, would we necessarily want to exploit it?

What we can show is the negative: if lighting is poor, then people will complain and will be unhappy – obvious really? And perhaps we can assume that an unhappy workforce is not necessarily the most productive; it may therefore follow that if wellbeing is raised, productivity will increase.

Issues around wellbeing will be reviewed in the context of:

  1. The past: The past 10-15 years have been about technology, including lighting control and LED
  2. A snapshot of where we are
  3. The future – the next major influence will be people and how we feel
Dominic Meyrick Bio

Dominic Meyrick, Hoare Lea

Dominic joined Hoare Lea in 2000 to establish the Lighting Group. He is now a Partner with responsibility for leading the Daylight, Artificial Light and CGI (Computer Generated Image) teams. His lighting expertise covers all aspects of the built environment, from buildings and structures, through to public realm and urban master planning

Dominic has worked with high-profile architects and designers on prestigious projects such as Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford; and Western Transit Shed, Hoare Lea’s London office. Project awards include: ‘Daylight Project’ and ‘Public Building Project of the Year’ at the Lighting Design Awards  for Heathrow Terminal 2, and ‘Heritage Project’ for Trinity Hall, Cambridge University.

A gifted speaker, Dominic regularly contributes to conferences and has been published in many design publications. He is passionate about  the importance of light and has a keen interest in how our brains work and how we see the world.

1245: Using Building Data to Predict Wellbeing and Productivity

Trevor Keeling, Buro Happold

Trevor Keeling Bio

Trevor has carried out extensive research to understand how to develop a holistic set of parameters to evaluate and monitor indoor environmental quality of buildings. He is now a Senior Engineer in the Sustainability & Building Physics Group at BuroHappold Engineering where he is integrating this research into design practice.

1615: Wellbeing – Could work be good for you?

Nicola Gillen, AECOM

With 9.9 million working days lost due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety in Great Britain in 2014/151, employees’ health and happiness can have a direct impact on business performance. Making improvements to the physical environment can help organisations create spaces and working cultures that encourage creativity, support wellbeing and increase job satisfaction. Redesigning and reimagining the workplace to better support how work is done now and in the future not only enhances wellbeing, it also improves performance and productivity. With four generations occupying the same space, it is important the physical environment meets their different working styles.

This involves capturing organisational demand, translating this into strategic briefing documents or workplace strategies, implementing design solutions across geographies and business lines. Motivating and maintaining change is at the heart of this work. Nicola has lived and worked in North America, the Far East and Europe.

Nicola drives thought leadership at AECOM around the future of work, regularly publishing and speaking at conferences.
